A/C Systems Could Be Spreading the Virus

August 19, 2020

SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, has confused and puzzled researchers since its discovery. One particularly baffling feature of the virus has been its ability to spread and cause disease even during the hotter part of the year. Although some researchers expressed the hope that Covid-19 cases might decline during the summer, they were disappointed to see cases rising in some areas. While there were many possible factors, air conditioning soon came under scrutiny. Poorly maintained HVAC systems, especially those equipped with substandard filters, seem to be responsible for spreading SARS-Cov-2 and other pathogens.

SARS-Cov-2 is very easy to spread via droplets of moisture in the air. It can live on surfaces for several days, even weeks. This makes it especially dangerous in homes and buildings where the air conditioning system needs attention. HVAC systems that are not regularly inspected, cleaned, and repaired can become breeding grounds for infectious diseases and other dangerous microorganisms. These are then circulated throughout the building along with the conditioned air, potentially transmitting the infection to every room in the house.

Even before the advent of Covid-19, HVAC systems were associated with dangerous ailments like Legionnaire’s Disease. This form of pneumonia, caused by the Legionella bacterium, is especially risky to older people and those with breathing difficulties. Other pathogens that can spread through air conditioning systems include mold spores and pollutants.

Luckily, there is a solution. You can fight Covid-19 and other diseases by maintaining and upgrading your HVAC system and replacing standard filters with advanced filters that are capable of removing pathogens from the air.

Regular maintenance of your HVAC systems prevents dirt and debris from building up. It also tackles issues such as leaks and condensation, which can produce damp and humid spots where mold, bacteria, and viruses can flourish.

Don’t neglect the filters in your AC system. Filters need to be changed regularly — at least once every month. Without attention, filters will eventually become clogged with dust and detritus. Cheaper ones may start to break down, allowing unfiltered air to pass through them. It is essential to choose quality filters for your AC as these can make a significant difference in your home’s air quality.

If you are concerned about Covid-19 and other illnesses, consider investing in an air purification system. These include systems like RGF’s REMO HALO air purifiers. Air purification systems work with your air conditioning system to scrub the air of viruses, bacteria, and molds. They also remove pollutants such as smoke, soot, animal dander, and pollen. A quality air purifier can even remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air. The result is fresher, cleaner air inside your home, with a reduced risk of infection. Air purifier systems are especially beneficial if someone in your household suffers from allergies or respiratory disorders. Cleaner air means fewer allergens and milder symptoms.

Even aside from pollution and disease, a poorly maintained HVAC system is less efficient and more likely to break down during the cooling or heating season when you need it most. You should aim to have your HVAC system inspected at least once every year. Some owners have their systems checked twice yearly, once before the summer cooling system begins and once before the cold weather arrives. These regular inspections help spot issues before they start, giving you peace of mind and a reliable central HVAC system.

If your air conditioning system shows signs of malfunctioning, you should contact a reputable HVAC service provider right away. Loud noises from the motor, poor performance, and cold spots can all be signs that your system needs attention. Don’t delay — schedule an inspection as soon as possible.
